Periodontal Gum Health

According to the CDC, over 64.7 million Americans suffer from periodontal or gum disease. Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar, which can infect the soft tissues of the gum and make them inflamed and prone to bleeding. If the infection isn't stopped, it can also cause damage to the hard tissues of the mouth.

To prevent periodontal disease, we highly recommend you come to use for your twice a year regular dental appointment. However, if you already suffer from periodontal disease, we offer periodontal maintenance, which includes deep cleaning of the infection from your gums.

Periodontal maintenance is usually performed three to four weeks to fight the resurgence of the infection.

Gum Disease Screening

Early detection of gum disease can allow us to treat it more efficiently. At our dental office, Dr. Kindt and the team perform gum screening twice a year, as prescribed by the American Dental Association.

Dental screening includes a visual checkup of the health of your gums. Indication of gum disease can be red, puffy and painful gums as well as receded gums or pockets between the teeth and gum. It can also include x-rays to check the extent of the damage to the supporting structure of the teeth beneath the gums.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal disease is a chronic illness and can be advanced to a less harmful form into an advanced stage before you know it. The initial stage of gum disease in known as gingivitis and it is characterized by a build-up of plaque on and around your teeth as well tender and inflamed gums. At this stage, damage can be quickly fixed and your gum health can be recovered completely.

However, if gingivitis is allowed to progress, it can advance to more harmful periodontitis, which is marked by gums retreating from the teeth and deep pockets between the teeth and soft tissue. You will also experience tooth sensitivity and bad breath.

Periodontitis can lead to advanced periodontitis which involves severe damage to the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. At this stage damage may become irreversible and your teeth may fall off.

Before this happens, we recommend you schedule an appointment with us and get periodontal maintenance.

Causes of Gum Disease

Gum disease is popular among people who have poor oral hygiene or do not clean their teeth on a regular basis. People who regularly brush and floss are less prone to gum disease, however it does not rule out the fact that these people can also suffer from gum disease if they have a hormonal imbalance or they end up with an injury in their mouth. Although people believe that when they brush their teeth and regularly floss, they don't have to stress about anything because they have clean teeth and they will not suffer from any dental issues.

Oral Cancer Screening

At Timothy H. Kindt, DDS, oral cancer screening is done to detect signs or symptoms or cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. If you are at high-risk of cancer, we recommend oral cancer screening.

Oral cancer screening typically takes no more than 5 to 10 minutes.it involves a visual examination where we will look for suspicious signs like sores, discolored patches in your mouth, persistent bleeding in certain areas or lumps and bumps. It is followed by a physical examination where we will touch the different parts of your mouth, the underside of your chin, your jaw and the side of your neck to find any suspicious lumps, stiff tissue, or too slick or dry tissue.

If we find something suspicious, we may perform a small biopsy to find if cancer cells are present. However, if we recommend an oral cancer screening, it is not a cause for alarm. This is often just a precautionary measure to ensure all is right with your mouth.

Tooth Fillings

Dental fillings are the most common and one of the most simple and non-invasive tooth restoration method. Fillings are recommended if your teeth have mild to moderate damage and decay. At Timothy H. Kindt, DDS, we offer a lot of different filling materials to suit your needs, including gold fillings, amalgam fillings, and composite resin fillings.

The major benefit of getting filling is that they protect your teeth from further harm in an affordable way. If your teeth have become cracked or chipped, contact us today and we will determine whether filling is the right treatment choice for you.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are measures to remove the buildup of hardened tartar from your teeth and to prevent it from reoccurring. During a periodontal maintenance session, Dr. Kindt will use pointed dental equipment known as scalers and ultrasonic vibrations to remove the hardened calculus on your teeth.
We will then smooth the exposed tooth root so that bacteria will have a hard time clinging to it. This can prevent the reemergence of infection and allow your gums to heal and attack firmly back to your teeth.

Tooth Extractions

Even though it is our priority to save your teeth, sometimes your oral health is better off when we remove a tooth or two. Tooth extraction may be done if your tooth is damaged beyond saving, if your tooth has become loose because of periodontal disease, you have a crowded mouth, or if a wisdom tooth is hurting you.

Tooth extraction involves simple or surgical extractions; however, both types of extractions are pain-free and do not require a lot of recovery or downtime. If you feel your tooth is badly damaged or causing your problems, schedule an appointment with us and we will see whether it warrants removal.

Missing a Tooth

Have you lost a tooth? If so, a suitable replacement for the lost or damaged tooth should be sought as soon as possible. There are several options to replace your damaged tooth. With a missing tooth, it may be difficult to smile, chew, and talk, regardless of whether you have lost one tooth or multiple.

If you have lost or damaged a tooth or multiple teeth, then our skilled team here at Timothy H. Kindt, DDS can help you fix your issues to restore your smile.

Sealants

Dental sealants are plastic coatings that are placed on the chewing surface of the teeth to prevent dental caries. Dental sealants are very effective if placed on the molars and premolars of a child, but they can also be beneficial for adults by protecting their teeth.

Dental sealants provide a smooth chewing surface which means it makes it easy for people to keep their teeth clean. They also form a barrier against bacterial infections, resulting in a lower risk of cavities.

Children's Dentistry

Kids dentistry is a field of dentistry that aims to provide children teens, and people with special needs dental care free from anxiety and pain. We perform dental cleanings, applying sealants and fluoride to your children's teeth, emergency pediatric dental care, safe sedation methods for children, and offer advice on proper nutrition.

We understand that childhood dental care is essential for the future of your child's teeth and can cultivate in them a habit of keeping their dental appointments when they become adults.

Sports Mouth Guards

Custom-fit sports mouth guards can be made at our Mesa, AZ office. Mouth guards offer protection against injury during contact sports, and reduce the severity of certain types of injuries to the teeth and gums.

Night Mouth Guards

In the same way that sports mouth guards offer protection, a night mouth guard can help with damage done during sleep. A custom-fitted night mouth guard can help with symptoms of bruxism (teeth-grinding) and sleep apnea as well.
